Traffic Unit
The Rialto Police Department Traffic Unit, under the direction
of Lieutenant Joe Cirilo and Sergeant Jim Kurkoske, has two
primary responsibilities. The unit investigates traffic collisions
and all traffic related crimes, and strives to reduce highway
deaths, injuries, and property damage through
enforcement. Seven officers, one corporal, and one sergeant
comprise this unit and are trained in the latest techniques
in traffic investigation and enforcement.
Officers in this unit use a variety of sophisticated equipment
in the investigation of serious accidents. Our officers use
land surveying equipment and complex computer mapping systems
to generate precise factual diagrams of collision scenes. These
diagrams are used to determine vehicle speeds and directions
of travel. Complex algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric calculations
are performed during the course of the investigations. In order
to better understand and investigate collisions, skilled traffic
officers are trained and educated in various field of science,
including kinetics and Newtonian physics.
In
an effort to reduce traffic collisions, accident trends are
tracked and enforcement efforts are focused in those areas
found to be prone to collisions. Officers enforce traffic
laws aimed at reducing our collision and injury rates using
vehicles equipped with radar or laser speed determining devices. All
of our officers who use this equipment have completed a minimum
of four days of State approved instruction and have been tested
on their ability to accurately use it.

Another priority of the Traffic Unit
is the enforcement of driving under the influence (DUI)
laws. We make use of checkpoints, saturation patrols
and daily patrols to reduce DUI related injuries and
deaths. All traffic officers are equipped with Preliminary
Alcohol Screening (PAS) devices to help them in the
enforcement of DUI laws. The Rialto Police Department
Traffic Unit is committed to improving the highway safety
for our city's residents and visitors and to provide
the best possible service in the area of accident investigation.
